With the arrival of winter, low temperatures and extreme weather conditions can put our health and wellbeing to the test. Although in Malaga we do not have ice on the streets on a regular basis, it is possible that in mountain areas or when travelling, extreme cold conditions can cause accidents or discomfort. Also, during this time of year, other risks, such as heating burns or falls on slippery surfaces, become more common. Having basic first aid skills can be vital in handling emergency situations quickly and effectively. Here is a first aid guide to deal with the most common winter injuries.
1. Slips and falls on slippery surfaces
Although there is no ice on the streets of Malaga, in mountain areas or during trips to cold places it is possible to come across icy or snow-covered roads. Slip and fall injuries are one of the most common injuries in winter, and can cause anything from sprains and strains to serious fractures.
First aid for falls:
Stay calm: If you fall, try to stay calm and assess your situation. If you have pain in any part of your body, do not move and call for help.
Immobilise the affected area: If you suspect a fracture or sprain, immobilise the area with a makeshift splint to prevent further damage.
Apply cold: If you have swelling or bruising, apply an ice pack wrapped in a towel to the affected area for 15-20 minutes, several times a day.
Seek medical attention: If pain persists or if the affected area becomes deformed, seek medical attention immediately.
2. Burns from heating or cookers
During winter, the use of heaters and cookers increases, which can lead to the risk of burns, either by direct contact with hot surfaces or by exposure to intense heat sources.
First aid for heating burns:
Cool the burn: Cool the affected area under cold water for at least 10 minutes or use a clean, damp cloth.
Do not use ice directly: Avoid direct contact with ice, as it can further damage the skin.
Cover the burn: If the burn is minor, cover it with a sterile bandage. If it is severe, seek medical attention immediately, avoiding breaking blisters.
Hydration and pain control: Drink fluids and use over-the-counter analgesics to relieve pain, always following the instructions on the package leaflet
3. Colds and flu: Beware of winter viruses
Cold weather and low humidity encourage the spread of viruses such as colds and flu. While they are not serious physical injuries, they are conditions that can quickly deteriorate your well-being and, if not managed well, can lead to more serious complications.
First aid for colds and flu:
Constant hydration: Drinking fluids such as water, herbal teas or broths is essential to maintain hydration and support the immune system.
Adequate rest: Rest is vital for the body to fight viruses effectively.
Medications to relieve symptoms: Use over-the-counter medications to relieve fever, muscle pain or congestion, always following your doctor's or pharmacist's instructions.
4. Cold injuries to muscles
Cold can tighten muscles, which increases the risk of injuries such as strains or pulls, especially if you are active outdoors in winter.
First aid for muscle injuries:
Rest: Rest the affected area and avoid sudden movements or additional strain.
Cold application: Apply ice to the affected area to reduce swelling for the first 48 hours.
Compression and elevation: Use an elastic bandage to compress the injured area and elevate it to reduce swelling.
5. Hyperthermia (heat stroke in closed environments)
Although it is winter, excessive use of heating or an enclosed, overheated environment can cause symptoms of hyperthermia, especially if the house is too warm.
First aid for hyperthermia:
Move the affected person to a cool place: If someone is showing symptoms of overheating, such as excessive sweating or dizziness, it is important to move them to a cool place.
Hydration: Offer water to the affected person, as dehydration can make symptoms worse.
Light clothing: Make sure the person is dressed lightly to help regulate their body temperature.
