Cold or flu? How to tell the difference and treat them

With the arrival of winter, low temperatures are often accompanied by episodes of flu and colds. Although both conditions share similar symptoms, differentiating between them is key to treating them properly. In this blog, we explain how to distinguish between them and which products from our pharmacy can help relieve your discomfort.

1. Differences between influenza and colds

Although both are caused by viruses, there are significant differences between flu and colds:

Common cold:

  • Symptoms: Nasal congestion, sore throat, sneezing and mild cough.

  • Onset: Symptoms appear gradually.

  • Duration: Usually lasts 3-7 days.

  • Severity: Annoying, but does not usually prevent daily activities.

Flu:

  • Symptoms: High fever, muscle aches, severe fatigue, dry cough and sometimes nasal congestion.

  • Onset: Symptoms appear suddenly.

  • Duration: May last 7 to 14 days.

  • Severity: Can be more disabling and, in some cases, cause complications such as pneumonia.

2. How to prevent both conditions

Prevention is always the best strategy. These tips can help you reduce the risk of infection:

  • Boost your immune system: Include foods rich in vitamin C and zinc in your diet, and consider supplements that strengthen your defences. We recommend Redoxon.

  • Wash your hands frequently: Use soap and water or disinfectant gels such as Sterilium Gel or wipes.

  • Avoid sudden changes in temperature: wrap up warm and protect your throat and nose.

  • Get a flu vaccination: This is especially important for the elderly, pregnant women and those with respiratory problems.

3. Treatments to relieve symptoms

If you have already contracted the flu or a cold, these products available in our pharmacy can help you:

  • Nasal decongestants: To relieve congestion and make breathing easier, such as Fitonasal Aboca.

  • Antipyretics and analgesics: Such as paracetamol or ibuprofen to reduce fever and muscle aches. Other options include Antidol or Ibufen.

  • Cough syrups: There are options for dry or productive coughs; ask us which is most suitable. We recommend Pharysol Mixture.

  • Immune supplements: Products with vitamin C, propolis or echinacea can speed up recovery such as Redoxon.

  • Throat sprays and lozenges: To relieve irritation and pain when swallowing. You can use Strepsils.

4. When to see a doctor

Although most cases can be treated at home, it is important to seek medical attention if you have any of these symptoms:

  • Persistent fever for more than 3 days.

  • Difficulty breathing.

  • Chest pain.

  • Worsening of symptoms after apparent improvement.

5. Take care of yourself and your family

In addition to the treatments, remember to get enough rest, keep well hydrated and avoid contact with other people to prevent the spread of the virus.

At Farmacia Paseo del Mar, we have everything you need to take care of yourself this winter, from treatments to personalised advice. If you have any doubts about which product is best for you, don't hesitate to visit us, your wellbeing is our priority!
