Hair loss in autumn: causes and treatments to strengthen it

Hair loss in autumn is one of the most common reasons for consultation at the pharmacy. Many people notice that they lose more hair than usual when washing, combing, or simply waking up in the morning. This can be worrying, but in most cases, it's simply seasonal hair loss.

Hair has a natural renewal cycle, and at certain times of the year, especially in autumn, this process becomes more noticeable. However, even though it's common, it doesn't mean we should ignore it. Caring for your hair during this stage helps strengthen it, improve its density, and prevent further hair loss.

The natural hair cycle

Each hair goes through several phases:

Anagen phase

This is the growth phase. It can last several years and determines the length and strength of the hair.

Catagen phase

It is a transition phase in which hair stops growing.

Telogen phase

It's the shedding phase. The hair falls out and makes way for a new one.

Under normal conditions, we lose between 50 and 100 hairs a day. In autumn, more hairs enter the telogen phase at the same time, so the hair loss is more noticeable.

Why does more hair fall out in autumn?

Autumn hair loss can be due to several factors:

Seasonal renewal

It's a natural response of the body. Hair renews itself, just like other tissues.

Accumulated summer damage

During the summer, hair is exposed to sun, chlorine, salt, sweat, and frequent washing. All of this can weaken the hair fiber and sensitize the scalp.

Stress and returning to routine

Stress directly affects the hair growth cycle. September and October are usually months of change, returning to work, studies, and increased mental strain.

Nutritional deficiencies

Hair needs protein, iron, zinc, biotin, B vitamins, and amino acids to grow strong. An unbalanced diet can contribute to hair loss.

Hormonal changes

Hormonal changes, postpartum, menopause, or thyroid problems can influence hair loss.

When is it normal and when should you worry?

Seasonal hair loss typically lasts between 6 and 8 weeks. Although it may seem heavy, if the hair maintains its density and no bald patches appear, it is usually a temporary process.

It is advisable to check if:

  • The fall lasts for more than three months.

  • There is a clear loss of density.

  • Thinning areas or bald patches appear.

  • The scalp itches, flakes, or is irritated.

  • There is intense fatigue, heavy periods, or suspicion of anemia.

  • The fall appears abruptly.

Treatments to strengthen hair

Topical treatments

Hair lotions, ampoules, and serums help stimulate the scalp, strengthen the follicle, and improve hair anchoring.

They usually include assets such as:

  • Caffeine.

  • Aminexil.

  • Peptides.

  • Vegetable extracts.

  • Vitamins.

  • Serenoa repens.

Consistency is key. These treatments usually take several weeks to show results.

Strengthening shampoos

An anti-hair loss shampoo alone won't usually stop severe hair loss, but it can complement your routine. It helps cleanse the scalp without irritating it and prepares the area for subsequent treatments.

It is important to choose mild shampoos that are suitable for the type of scalp: oily, sensitive, dry or flaky.

Hair nutrition supplements

Hair is nourished from within. Specific supplements can provide:

  • Biotin.

  • Zinc.

  • Selenium.

  • Iron, if indicated.

  • Sulfur-containing amino acids.

  • B vitamins.

  • Antioxidants.

They are especially useful in cases of seasonal hair loss, restrictive diets, stress, or weakened hair.

Habits that help reduce hair loss

Avoid excessive heat

Hair dryers, straighteners, and curling irons can weaken hair fibers. It's best to use them in moderation and apply heat protectant.

Avoid overusing tight updos

Very tight ponytails or buns can cause hair loss due to traction.

Massage the scalp

Massage improves microcirculation and promotes the absorption of treatments.

Take care of your diet

Proteins, eggs, fish, nuts, vegetables and legumes provide essential nutrients for hair.

Managing stress

Prolonged stress can prolong hair loss. Rest, exercise, and relaxing routines can help.

Hair loss in autumn is usually temporary, but it can be greatly improved if we take action from the start. A routine that combines topical treatment, the right shampoo, nutritional supplements, and good habits can make all the difference.
