How to repair your skin after summer: hydration, blemishes and regeneration

After summer, skin often reflects the effects of weeks of sun, beach, pool, heat, and changes in routine. Although during vacation we may notice our skin is more tanned and radiant, by the end of the season it's common to see signs of dehydration, blemishes, uneven texture, lack of radiance, or a dull complexion.

Now is the ideal time to revitalize your skin and restore its balance. After accumulated sun exposure, your skin needs a specific routine based on three pillars: hydration, treatment of blemishes, and skin regeneration.

Why does skin deteriorate after summer?

During the summer months, skin is subjected to numerous external aggressors. The sun is the main factor, but not the only one. Pool chlorine, sea salt, sweat, heat, dietary changes, and, in many cases, a less consistent skincare routine also play a role.

Ultraviolet radiation promotes the formation of free radicals, which are responsible for premature aging. It also disrupts the skin barrier, reduces the skin's natural hydration, and can stimulate irregular melanin production, leading to the appearance of dark spots.

That's why, upon returning from vacation, many people notice:

  • Drier or tighter skin.

  • Lack of light.

  • New spots or darker spots.

  • More visible pores.

  • Irregular texture.

  • Feeling of dull skin.

  • Greater sensitivity.

First step: restore hydration

Hydration is essential for repairing skin after summer. Dehydrated skin loses elasticity, looks duller, and tolerates depigmenting or renewing treatments less well.

It is recommended to incorporate products with moisturizing and repairing ingredients, such as:

  • Hyaluronic acid , which helps retain water in the skin.

  • Glycerin , which improves surface hydration.

  • Ceramides , which strengthen the skin barrier.

  • Niacinamide , which soothes, repairs and improves tone.

  • Panthenol , ideal for sensitive skin.

At this stage, it's best to avoid overly aggressive routines. Before starting intensive treatments for blemishes or skin renewal, the skin should be well-hydrated and balanced.

Second step: treat sunspots

Sunspots are one of the most frequent reasons for doctor visits after summer. They can appear on the face, neck, hands, and shoulders, especially in skin prone to hyperpigmentation.

To treat them, it is important to combine three types of products:

1. Daily sun protection

Even though summer is over, sunscreen is still essential. If you don't use sunscreen every day, any anti-dark spot treatment loses its effectiveness.

Ideally, use a broad-spectrum facial sunscreen, preferably SPF 50, especially if you already have dark spots.

2. Antioxidants

Vitamin C is one of the most recommended active ingredients in September. It helps to brighten the skin, protect against oxidative damage, and improve skin tone.

3. Depigmenting actives

Ingredients such as niacinamide, tranexamic acid, azelaic acid, or viniferine can help improve the appearance of blemishes and even out skin tone.

Consistency is key. Dark spots don't disappear overnight, but a proper routine can greatly improve the appearance of your skin.

Third step: promote skin regeneration

After summer, skin can accumulate dead cells, leading to a dull tone and less even texture. Incorporating gentle exfoliation can help restore radiance.

However, it's important not to overdo it. Exfoliating too aggressively can irritate the skin and worsen blemishes.

The following can be used:

  • Gentle exfoliants.

  • Low concentration renewing acids.

  • Illuminating face masks.

  • Regenerative night treatments.

If the skin is sensitive, dry, or irritated, it's best to start with hydration and repair before introducing renewing actives.

Recommended post-summer routine

A basic routine to recover your skin after summer could include:

In the morning

  1. Gentle cleaning.

  2. Antioxidant serum, such as vitamin C.

  3. Light moisturizing or repairing cream.

  4. SPF 50 sunscreen.

At night

  1. Facial cleansing.

  2. Depigmenting or regenerating treatment.

  3. Repairing moisturizing cream.

Once or twice a week, a moisturizing mask or a gentle exfoliant can be added, depending on the condition of the skin.

After summer, skin needs a routine focused on repairing, hydrating, and restoring lost radiance. September is the perfect time to treat blemishes, strengthen the skin barrier, and prepare skin for the change of season.
