Summer is synonymous with sun, beach, pool, and vacations… but it can also turn into a nightmare for your hair if you don't take certain precautions. During this time, hair is exposed to multiple stressors that weaken it, dry it out, and make it dull.

The result? Split ends, frizz, dull color, and unmanageable hair. But don't worry: with some simple care and the right drugstore products, you can keep your hair healthy, hydrated, and protected all summer long.

What factors damage hair in summer?

1. Sun: UV rays affect the hair cuticle, dehydrating it and oxidizing natural or dyed color.

2. Chlorine from the pool: Dryness, stiffness and even color change (especially in blonde hair).

3. Sea salt: Although it has beneficial minerals, it also absorbs moisture from the hair, leaving it rough and brittle.

4. Frequent washing: The natural sebum that protects the scalp and hair is lost.

5. Humidity and sweat: They increase frizz and the “messy” appearance of the hair.

Basic tips to protect your hair in summer

1. Use hair sun protection

Just as you protect your skin, you should also protect your hair.

  • Apply sprays or oils with UV filters before going out in the sun.

  • Reapply after each swim, just like with sunscreen.

Our recommendation is Rene Furterer's sun care line for hair.

2. Deeply hydrates

After a day of sun exposure, hydration is essential to repair the damage.

  • Use nourishing masks at least 1 or 2 times a week.

  • Daily, apply a leave-in conditioner or hydrating serum to your mid-lengths and ends, such as Apivita masks.

3. Rinse your hair after swimming in the sea or pool

Whenever you get out of the water, rinse your hair with fresh water to remove any salt or chlorine residue as quickly as possible.

  • If you don't have access to a shower, bring a thermal water spray with you to neutralize damage, such as Avène Thermal Water.

4. Use mild, summer-specific shampoos

Wash your hair with a shampoo that respects its natural balance. Choose formulas:

  • Gentle, without aggressive sulfates.

  • Moisturizing and with repairing active ingredients.

  • Ideal if formulated for sun-exposed or colored hair.

We recommend shampoos from Klorane's Polysiane line.

5. Trim the tips before and after summer

It's a simple way to prevent damage from progressing. A trim every 6-8 weeks will keep your hair healthy, strong, and looking its best.

What if I have dyed hair?

If you have hair color, you need even more protection. Sunlight and chlorine accelerate color loss and leave a "straw-like" effect.

  • Use specific products for color-treated hair with antioxidants, such as Apivita's color shampoos and masks.

  • Avoid extreme heat (such as flat irons or hair dryers) during this time.

Taking care of your hair in the summer is just as important as taking care of your skin. With a little prevention and the right products, you can avoid the damage caused by the sun, chlorine, and salt. At your pharmacy, you'll find specific options for each hair type, and we can help you choose the best routine for your needs.

This summer, show off healthy, shiny hair, even after a day at the beach or pool!
